Food Nutritional Testing and Food Labeling - Laboratory Analysis - ILS

Nutritional Labeling Testing/Analysis

The food chemistry department analyse a wide range of food and drink products and raw materials for food nutritional and food labelling purposes.

With almost 40 years experience there can hardly be a food product or raw material that we have not tested.

Nutritional testing/analysis for food labelling may be declared in two main ways, one is Group 1 declaration and the other is Group 2 declaration.

Lower Salt and Sodium levels required in foods by 2012 are going to increase the number of new formulations of products with lower salt/sodium levels

ILS can undertake sodium and salt testing as stand alone tests or as part of a Catagory 2 Nutritional analysis

Group 1 Nutritional Testing

energy                KJ and Kcal
protein                g
carbohydrate      g
fat                       g

Group 1 nutritional (occasionally known as Category 1 or "big 4") is the minimum nutritional declaration permitted.

Contact ILS - for more information and prices.

 Group 2 Nutritional Testing

energy               KJ and Kcal
protein               g
carbohydrate     g
of which:
      - sugars       g
fat                      g
of which:
     - saturates    g
fibre                   g
sodium               g

Informatrion declared should be expressed as g/100g or g/100ml.

It is recommended that Group 2 (occasionally known as category 2 or "Big 4 + little 4" and "4+4") nutritional information is declared.

Group2 nutritional is considered to give consumers a good guide to the key health related nutrients within a food product and is used for labelling requirements.

Other nutrients may be declared as part of the group 2 on a voluntary basis, but must be declared if a nutritional claim is made,  for example: "rich in calcium".

We can offer a 6 working day fast track service as well as our standard 10 working day turnaround service.

With prior arrangement with the laboratory we can also offer an 3 day express service

ILS are UKAS accredited for the testing carried out for nutritional labelling claims.
