Incidence of Campylobacter and Salmonella cases fall in 2008
9th February 2010The incidence of Campylobacteriosis and Salmonella cases in the EU has dropped in 2008; it has taken a year for these figures to be compiled.
The most frequently reported human infection is still Campylobacter but the number of cases was down by 5%.
The second most reported was Salmonella and this was down 13.5%, but this organism caused over 35% of food borne outbreaks.
The confirmed number of Listeria cases also fell by 11.0%.
Incidences of Ecoli VTEC however rose by 9% but this could be influenced by different reporting factors when compared to previous years.
In 2008 there were >5,000 food borne outbreaks in the EU which caused 32 deaths, Salmonella was responsible for over 35% of the out breaks.
(NB Figures and percentages are approximate and have been rounded for general information purposes)
In Food:
Campylobacter was found in raw poultry but also in several species of live animals.
Salmonella was found in raw chicken, turkey, and pork.
Ecoli VTEC was found in meat and other products from cows and other ruminants
Listeria was found in smoked fish, cheeses and heat treated products
