Bioburden Testing
Biodurden is a test undertaken on pharmaceutical and medical products as a measure of the quality of the production of those products.
A Bioburden is the total number of microorganisms present on a product prior to sterilisation. This aids as a measure of levels of viable organisms to compare with the effectiveness of the sterilisation procude which is to be used.
The determination of a total Bioburden on medical devices and products prior to sterilisation is performed at ILS.
The standard method used is British Standard ISO 11737-1.
Bioburden of raw materials and finished pharmaceutical products helps to determine whether the product complies with the requirements of the EU or US Pharmacopeia's.
