Food Authencity Testing & Country of Origin

International Laboratory Services have made it easier for manufacturers to comply with their legal requirements for food authenticity, food labelling and food fraud by providing food authenticity laboratory testing to determine the Country of origin using Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis.

It has never been more important for food manufacturers to ensure they meet the legal requirements of food authenticity for their products and ingredients.

Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis (SIRA) takes advantage of the natural chemical variation of the Earth. The technique focuses on isotopes of the elements hydrogen and oxygen which, in proteins, are derived largely from drinking water and carbon, nitrogen and sulphur which are mainly derived from the food the animal eats.

Combining these isotopes into a “geographical fingerprint”, enables us to provide robust testing solutions that ensure protein products are consistent with the claimed origin and the stated production system.

It is now a legal requirement for the Country of Origin to be declared on the following foods:

All beef products & preparations
Olive Oil
Fresh Fruit
Fresh Vegetables
Fresh meat products from pigs
Fresh meat products from sheep
Fresh meat products goat
Fresh meat products from poultry

The Country of origin is also required for the primary ingredient if it differentiates from the given country of origin of food as advertised. For example ‘Italian Meatballs’ – where the meat is sourced in the UK.

Food fraud has been around for a considerable length of time, but was brought to light and further actions taken since the Horsegate Scandal in January 2013. Since then the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have implemented guidelines and requirements which are heavily regulated and in addition are set to increase and evolve even further in the near future.
